Albert C. Heinlein

May 26, 1924 — March 8, 2017

Albert Heinlein, loved the Lord and was welcomed into his eternal home on March 8, 2017.

Albert was born on May 26, 1924 in Erie, Pa., to Albert and Ruth (McCartney) Heinlein. He graduated in 1942 from Academy High School and enrolled in Gannon College, in Erie. He transferred to Penn State University, majoring in chemical engineering. While at Penn State he entered the Navy's V-12, Officer Candidate Program, and was sent to Cornell University majoring in chemical engineering. He received additional training in meteorology at MIT.

Following World War II, he returned to Penn State University, completing both his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degree in Chemical Engineering. He went on to earn a Master of Business Administration degree from Rutgers University and his Ph.D. in Economics from Western Reserve University.

He was employed as a Chemical Engineer for Merck Pharmaceutical Co. from 1949 until 1956 and then entered the academic world as a Professor of Business Administration at Gannon College. In 1962 he came to Kent State University as Assistant Professor of Industrial Production in the College of Business Administration. He was promoted to Professor of Administrative Sciences and later was appointed Director of Graduate Programs in Business. He retired from Kent State in 1985.

Albert's life was guided by his strong Catholic faith. He was involved in The Christian Family Movement (CFM), Living Room Dialogue, Cursillo, and he conducted a Catholic communion/prayer service for area nursing homes for over 20 years. He was an active member of St. Patrick Parish in Kent and volunteered at Saint Patrick School for many years. He also attended the Newman Center in Kent. He was part of a team of people who brought a Vietnamese boat family to Kent in the 1970's. His faith beliefs were lived out in his life.

Can you hear him singing? Albert loved to sing almost anywhere, which was often embarrassing to his children. He was a good singer, and if the "spirit moved him," he would break into songs reflective of his Scotch-Irish or German heritage. He loved songs such as "Danny Boy" or "O du Schone Schnitzelbank," and he would croon in a restaurant, while driving with a group of people, or even beside a street musician in Ireland, where he garnered a few Irish pounds for the violinist. He really just loved people and he made friends with folks from all walks of life and many countries around the world. He and his first wife, Dorothy George Heinlein, often entertained students and professors in their home and invited graduate students from India, Thailand, Holland, and Trinidad to live with them.

Following the death of Dorothy, in 2001, Albert married Elda Siciliano Spano. They were married for 12 years, until her death in 2015. A special highlight for the two of them was their honeymoon in Italy, where Elda was able to connect with several of her relatives. Al told everyone that he was "Italian by marriage, twice."

Albert set an example of how to live a life of service and generosity to others. He is survived by his children, Karen (Doug) Fuller of Kent and Doug Heinlein of Bainbridge Island, WA; step-sons David (Sedra) Spano of Charlotte, NC and Robert (Robin) Spano of Tallmadge; step-daughters, Diane (Ron) Wood and Susan (Michael) Kunar; four grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; three step great grandchildren; and brother, David (Beverly) Heinlein of Erie, Pa.

He was preceded in death by his first wives; his parents, Albert and Ruth Heinlein; and sisters, Doris Kuhn and Jane Roach.

The family is so appreciative of the loving care Al received by the staff at the Gables of Kent Ridge and Harbor Lights Hospice.
