Albert F. Swetel, 77, of Kent, passed away on Wednesday, March 30, 2022 at Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center. He was born in Wilkes-Barre, PA on October 12, 1944 to the late Victor and Marion (Lawson) Swetel and was a graduate of North High School in Eastlake. Albert went on to earn an Associate’s Degree from Lakeland Community College and Bachelor’s Degree from Kent State University.
He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War, from 1966-1970. He was then employed as an Ohio State Highway Patrolman in Ravenna, before pursuing a career in manufacturing, where he held a variety of management positions. Following retirement, Albert worked as a substitute teacher in Portage County. He volunteered at the Board of Elections, attended St. Patrick Catholic Church and enjoyed bike rides, cruises and vacationing in Hawaii, where he especially enjoyed hiking Diamond Head.
Albert was a member of American Legion Post #496 in Kent, where he was a former Commander and Honor Guard Chaplain along with several other positions. He was very proud of his Lithuanian Heritage and was a member of The Lithuanian Club in Cleveland and Eagle’s Aerie #2436 in Chagrin Falls. He was an avid fan of Kent State Men’s Basketball, Kent State Football, the Cleveland Browns and Cleveland Indians. He enjoyed deer hunting with his family, reading, and John Wayne movies. Albert will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
He leaves his loving wife, Debra Swetel; daughter and son-in-law Heidi and Charles Waligura; sons and daughters-in-law, Victor and Terry Swetel and Mark and Corey Swetel; grandchildren, Kayla, Alana, Maxwell, Jolene, Ian and Ethan; and sisters, Patricia Hollis, Ruth Munjas and Jane Vanik.
Visitation will be Tuesday, April 5, 2022 from 10:00AM-11:00AM at Bissler and Sons Funeral Home, 628 W. Main St. Kent, OH 44240 followed by the funeral service at 11:00AM. Burial, with military honors, will follow at The Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, OH on Tuesday at 1:00PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made, in his name, to American Legion Post #496 Honor Guard, 1945 Mogadore Rd. Kent, OH 44240.
