Augustine Fisher Dussel, 95, of Brimfield, passed away on Sunday, December 5, 2021, in the comfort of his home surrounded by his loving family. Affectionately known as “Junior, Gus, and A.F.,” he was born in Kent on August 4, 1926, to Augustine and Bertha Dussel. He was a 1944 graduate of Kent Roosevelt High School and proudly served in the United States Army during WWII (Japan, Okinawa, and the Philippines). He recently participated in a wreath ceremony at the World War II monument in Washington DC during the D-Day Anniversary, as part of the Cleveland, Ohio “Honor Flight” program.
Gus operated Dussel Farms in Brimfield, Ohio, with his father (Gus Sr.) and his son, Mike. He was a founding member of the Portage County 4-H Beef Committee, member of the Farm Bureau, Ravenna VFW, Knights of Columbus, and Lifelong member of St. Patrick Catholic Church.
He had a passion for farming and all that came with it. He was loved by many and was very well known at local livestock/produce auctions, where he attended weekly. He still holds bidder “#1” at the Damascus Livestock Auction and was a staple in the farming community. He will always be remembered for his big green eyes, infectious smile, and heart of gold. He had friends everywhere and would do anything for anyone.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by the love of his life, Betty Dussel on August 12, 2015. He was hopelessly proud of his grandchildren and always made a point to help them every day. His contributions to his grandchildren’s lives are invaluable and can never be replaced.
He leaves behind his four children, Michael (Linda) Dussel, Patty Shircliff, Susy (Joe) Shenigo, Kathy (Greg) Eckhart, and his 17 grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Mike (Becky) Dussel (son George), Chris (Holly) Dussel (sons Paul, Gus, Luke, & Ben), Stephanie (Chad) Bailey (daughter Jo-Marie & son Owen), Katy (Jacob) Wolff (daughter Eloise), Alisa Shenigo, Kenny (Hannah) Shircliff, Andy, Samantha, and Emily Eckhart. “Grandpa Gus” will be missed dearly.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, December 10, 2021, at 11:00 AM at St. Patrick Catholic Church with the Rev. Fr. Richard Pentello as Celebrant. Visitation is from 10-11am and Burial will follow at Standing Rock Cemetery in Kent. Considering the Covid-19 pandemic, masks are requested.
In Lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Portage County Junior Fair Market Livestock Scholarship or the Brimfield Police/Fire Department. Special thanks to Officers Nieman, Kennedy, and Mars of the Brimfield Police Department and the Brimfield Fire Paramedics Trevor Baugher, Mike Richards, Joe Weigel, and Jake Butcher, for their unprecedented compassion and support. Also, special mention to Officer Robert Putnam of the Brimfield Police, with whom he loved sharing military stories.
