Benjamin H. Newberry, 83, of Kent, died on Monday, March 3, 2025 at Summa Health Care. He remained an appreciative, supportive, and Amiable patient through a six-plus year ordeal with Alzheimer’s Disease.
As a lifelong academic, Professor Newberry valued not only teaching in the psychology department at Kent State University and the University of Warsaw but also reading and discussing many different fields of science, as well as the arts, history, environmental issues, and politics. Ben played the tuba in his younger years and continued with a deep love of classical music thereafter. He received his PhD in psychology at the University of Wisconsin in 1969, then moved to Kent, which he called home for the rest of his life. Proficiency in teaching and advising students was as important to Ben as his publications, presentations, and book authorship. His interactions with students were well recognized by several all-campus honors and awards.
Benjamin married Deborah (Staiger) Newberry in June of 1970, telling her that this was “a forever thing”. And so it was, with both spouses treasuring their long and loving marriage. Ben is also survived by his dear daughters Margaret (Gregory) Sears of Bloomington, Indiana, and Andrea Newberry of Albuquerque, New Mexico; sister Barbara Newberry of Portland, Oregon; grandsons Benjamin and Henry Sears; and nephews Martin Wahl and Seth Sterling of Portland, Oregon.
