January 12, 1943 — August 10, 2023

Kent

Betty Jane “Betsy” Welser, 80, of Kent, passed away on Thursday, August 10, 2023 at KentRidge Senior Living.  She was born in Little Eagle, PA on January 12, 1943 to the late Carl and Eleanore Guckelberger and was a 1960 graduate of Revere High School.  Betty went on to earn her bachelor's degree from Miami University and her master’s degree from Kent State University.

She was a devoted elementary school teacher in the Kent City Schools for 30 years.  She made a tremendous impact on her students, due to her kindness and caring.  Betsy and her husband built their house as a labor of love.  She was very home and family oriented.  Betsy was a nature lover and supporter of the Audubon Society for 25 years.  She was an avid gardener and learned the common and Latin names for all the flowers in her garden.  Along with her husband Ted, she hosted many family gatherings and was always smiling, making people feel welcome and bringing love and care to every small detail. She will be deeply missed by family members, friends, and all who were lucky enough to know her. Betsy loved being a grandmother and spent many wonderful times together with her five grandchildren.

She leaves her loving husband of 57 years, Howard “Ted” Welser Jr, whom she married at Pilgrim United Church of Christ in Cuyahoga Falls on September 11, 1965; daughter Amy Gmerek (John); son Howard “Ted” Welser III (Laura Black); grandchildren, Mila, Raina, Sonia, Anna and Sydney “Seir”; sister Barbara Sterenberg (Frank); brothers, Carl Guckelberger Jr and David Guckelberger (Valiree Green); and half-brother Eric Guckelberger.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the Memory Care staff at The Kentridge Senior Living, and Traditions Health Hospice.

In honoring her wishes, Betsy will be cremated and a graveside service will be held on Monday, August 21, 2023 at 2:00PM at Standing Rock Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Audubon Society or the Parkinson’s Foundation.
