Carol A. (Sziber) Smodic, 53, of Portage, MI, passed away Wednesday, September 15, 2010 at Bronson Methodist Hospital, in Kalamazoo, MI, after a brave fight with ovarian cancer. Carol was born May 9, 1957 in Ravenna, the daughter of John and Mary (Majer) Sziber. She graduated from Kent State University in 1979 with a degree in accounting. Following her graduation, she worked for various major accounting firms, at which time she met her future husband, Daniel. They were married August 17, 1985 and moved to Portage in 1989. Carol and Dan recently celebrated their 25th anniversary. Carol was involved in various community activities and was very active in the lives of their three children. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and also traveling. Carol was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Church of Portage. She is survived by her husband, Daniel; their children, Dan, Michelle and Mike; her mother, Mary Sziber of Kent; her sisters, Rosemarie (Frank) Einholz of Stow and Amy (Dennis) West of Green; and 3 nieces and 3 nephews. Carol was preceded in death by her father, John Sziber, in 1975. There will be visitation and services in Portage. Then there will be calling hours held 5-8pm Tuesday, September 21st at Bissler & Sons Funeral Home in Kent. Funeral services will be held 9:30 AM Wednesday, September 22nd at St. Patrick Church with Father Richard Pentello officiating. Burial will be in Standing Rock Cemetery in Kent. Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, 525 North Broad Street, Canfield, OH 44406. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the American Cancer Society, 525 North Broad Street, Canfield, OH 44406.
