Charlotte S. Smith, 92, passed away Thursday, April 28, 2011. Charlotte was born February 14, 1919, the fifth daughter of William and Sarah Jane Speedy. She grew up on a 160 acre farm in Jefferson County, Ohio.
After graduating from Bergholz High School in 1934, she worked at the Extension Service mapping county properties. She was also employed at Isaly's, the Hoover Company in North Canton and National Exchange Bank in Steubenville.
In 1946, she attended an Older Rural Youth meeting and became re-acquainted with Albert Henry Smith. They married June 21, 1947, and moved to Streetsboro, then 4 years later to Kent. The couple have three sons, Ronald, Roger, and Randall. Charlotte was extremely proud of her sons and their families.
Charlotte was a life-time Methodist. She was a member of the Kent United Methodist Church for 52 years, where she was active in all aspects of the church life especially Miriam Circle and serving Rotary luncheons. Charlotte played bridge monthly with a group of treasured friends. She and her husband golfed and played cards with friends for over 40 years.
Charlotte was hard-working, selfless and giving. Her talents in gardening, baking and quilting were appreciated by all who knew and loved her. Charlotte loved to garden and shared the bounty of her garden with family and friends. Vases of roses from her garden were delivered frequently throughout the summer to share the beauty with others.
Charlotte was a talented quilter. Her quilts are truly family treasures. She blessed each family member with her creations and even had one ready to welcome her first great-grandson and several awaiting future arrivals.
Charlotte's cookies and pies were legendary. She always welcomed guests in her home with freshly baked goodies.
The family would like to thank Charlotte's dear friends for their support over the past years.
Survivors include her beloved husband of 64 years, Albert; children, Ronald and Sally of Lexington, VA, Roger and Cathy of West End, NC, Randall and Susan of Kent; grandchildren, Elizabeth Smith of New Orleans, LA, Adam Smith of Charleston, SC, Callie Smith of Stow, Matthew and Kristin Smith of Valparaiso, IN, Meghann Smith and Matt Featherstun of Kent; great-grandson, Reed Henry Smith of Valparaiso, IN; and sister, Lena Hill, 98 years old of Columbus.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, April 30th at United Methodist Church of Kent with Rev. Dr. David Palmer and Rev. Douglas Denton officiating. The family will receive friends one hour before the services. Burial will be held at Standing Rock Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Kent United Methodist Church, 1435 East Main Street, Kent, Ohio 44240.
