Command Sergean Richard James Farrell

Command Sergeant Major Richard James Farrell Sr., 69, of Linthicum, MD, passed away on Sunday, January 17, 2010 at Baltimore Washington Medical, Glen Burnie, MD. He was born September 14, 1940 in Akron to Joseph Robert and May E. (Eary) Farrell. Richard was drafted into the Army during the Vietnam War. This is where he found a home with a military family and decided to make the Army a career at 26 years of service to United States. He has served with the 1st, 4th, 5th, 8th and 24th infantry divisions. His biggest accomplishment to himself was being selected to the Command Sergeant Major Academy, showing he was at the top of his peers. During his tenure with the United States Army, he had received the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal with an Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Commendation Medal with an Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Achievement Medal and the Combat Infantryman's Badge. During his time in the military he had improved his civilian education through self-discipline to gain an Associates Degree from El Paso Community College. This soldier earned his thread in the U.S. Flag. "Welcome Home Brother" He is loved and survived by his son Richard Farrell Jr., daughter in law Kimberly Farrell (Cavanagh), grandson, Richard Farrell III of New Jersey; sisters, Agnes (Jerry) Moore, Ellen Jones, Anna Gray, Edith Herwick, Josephine (John) Hughes, and Judy (Ken) Flick; brothers, Robert E. Farrell and Frank Farrell. He was preceded in death by sisters, Margaret Stoffer, Catherine Roderick, and Infant Agnes Farrell; and brothers, Joseph R. Farrell Jr., Hugh Farrell, and Patrick Farrell. He was loved by the many nephews and nieces. The family will receive friends Sunday January 24th 2-5 PM at Bissler and Sons Funeral Home, 628 West Main Street, Kent, where funeral services will be held Monday at 11 am. Burial will be in Standing Rock Cemetery in Kent.
