Craig N. Lucas
Craig N. Lucas, 69, of Kent, OH, died Friday, April 1, 2011 at his residence.
He was born December 20, 1941 in Cleveland to Nick Lucas and Vivian (Romaine) Lucas Kirk. His parents preceded him in death. He is survived by sons; Erik Lucas and Ian Lucas both of Kent;
brother; Dennis (Bonnie) Lucas of Wooster; sister, Francine (Thomas Wince) Lucas of Copley; seven grandchildren; two great grandchildren; dear friend,
Janet Varner and her daughter Kate Rieppel; and many nieces and nephews.
Craig Lucas was born in Cleveland in 1941 and his career has centered upon his artistic practice here, growing through his influence as a teacher at Kent State University School of Art and through his unwavering commitment to the practice of painting. He received a B.F.A. from Kent State in 1967 and an M.A. in 1976. He began teaching at Kent in 1969, and, on retiring in 2004, was honored as an Emeritus Professor and with the establishment of a graduate assistantship in his name
He has received numerous awards, including the 2008 Cleveland Arts Prize Lifetime Achievement Award for Visual Arts, an Ohio Arts Council Fellowship and the Visual Arts Award from the Akron Area Arts Alliance. His dedication to the community and to education has helped shape the Northeast Ohio cultural atmosphere. His abstract paintings have been featured and collected by numerous regional institutions, including the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Akron Art Museum, and the Canton Art Museum. His work has also been exhibited at galleries and museums nationally and internationally.
Craig was active in the pursuit of all fine arts and music, in gardening, in spirituality through the Unitarian Universalist Church and his pursuit of yoga, and in many other philanthropic & political causes. Namaste.
A memorial gathering will be held 1:30 P.M. Sunday, April 10th at the Kent State University School of Art Gallery, Room 201, 400 Janik Drive in Kent. Additionally a memorial service will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, May 1st at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Kent, 226 Gougler Avenue, Kent, OH 44240. Bissler & Sons Funeral Home and Crematory are handling the arrangements.
