Dan Donaghy, husband of 53 years to Polly Starr Donaghy and father of Anne Merritt Donaghy and Catherine Curtis Donaghy, died peacefully April 21st, 2013.
A graduate of Western Reserve Academy and Princeton University, Mr. Donaghy was the long time president of Campus Supply. He joined the board of Hometown Bank in 1960 and became Chairman in 1975, a position he held at the time of his death. He was instrumental in the development of the Portage Terminal Railway. Mr. Donaghy was a member of the Lexington Group in Transportation History and contributed to publications on economic development and short line railroads.
In addition to his work in the community he took pleasure in the birds and trails of the Blue Ridge Parkway and sailing Lake Ontario and Presqu'ile Bay in Southeastern Ontario. He was an avid gardener, read extensively and enjoyed theatre, classical and jazz concerts. He followed the Cleveland Browns and Montreal Canadiens with the same enthusiasm he brought to crossword puzzles and walks across Civil War battlefields.
A lifelong resident of Kent, Mr. Donaghy was the son of Dick & Esther (Getz) Donaghy and brother of Merritt Donaghy Betts, who predeceased him. In addition to his wife and daughters he is survived by his sons-in-Iaw, Chris Steele and Franklin Jones and cousins, Judy West and Rob Kelly.
Graveside service will be held at Standing Rock Cemetery 11:00 AM Friday, April 26, 2013. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to the Robinson Memorial Hospital Foundation, 6847 N Chestnut Street, PO Box 1204, Ravenna, Ohio 44266. Bissler & Sons Funeral are handling the arrangements.
