David Glen Asp was born on June 4, 1952, and raised on the prairies of central Minnesota. He excelled at academics, sports (football, basketball, and track), and music (playing trombone in the band and singing tenor in the choir) — and he eventually went on to pursue these same interests at Bethel College, in the Twin Cities. That’s where he met a girl from North Dakota, Janet Kay Liechty. They got married in 1973, and they went on to raise four children together: Eric (1977), Jay (1978), Anna (1981), and Alex (1988).
David, or “Dave,” spent the majority of his career working for small churches in Elk Horn (Iowa), Lancaster (Wisconsin), Shelby (Ohio), and Kent (Ohio), where he was the only full-time paid employee. These job assignments took a toll on him, but he held firmly to his Christian faith through all the challenges. In the late stages of his career, he sought to use his experiences and his education (including a Masters of Divinity from Denver Seminary and Doctorate of Ministry from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School) to provide consulting and support to other pastors of small churches.
He spent his free time playing basketball and baking muffins and making music with various groups. He traveled to Ecuador, Ukraine, the Netherlands, Guam and Alaska. He took great pride in his family, and his family took great pride in him. We still take great pride in him, and in the memory of him.
