David Thomas Burroughs, 75, of Kent, passed away on Monday, March 3, 2025, in Orlando, FL. He was born in Flint, MI on January 28, 1950, to the late William McKinstry and Gwendolyn Elizabeth Burroughs. David earned his bachelor’s degree in music from Bowling Green State University in 1973.
He loved teaching music for over 35 years. David was the band director in St. Clairsville Schools for 10 years and at Kent City Schools for 25 years, retiring in 2007. Following retirement, David taught marching percussion with Cloverleaf High School for one year and Kent State University for four years. He was an Ohio Music Educators Association Adjudicator for 45 years with a marching band, concert band and small group ensembles.
David loved animals, the University of Michigan and Detroit sports, amusement parks and roller coasters and took great pride in caring for his yard. He enjoyed playing many sports in his youth and golf as an adult. David and his wife enjoyed traveling and reading a wide range of books. Nothing meant more to him than spending time with his children and grandchildren. He loved coaching his children’s youth baseball and softball teams and managing his son’s youth hockey team. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
He leaves his loving wife of 51 years, Donna Mae Burroughs; sister Joy Sullivan; children, Eric (Ruaida) Burroughs, Stasia (Timothy) Markley and Kevin (Natalie) Burroughs; grandchildren, Wesley, Jack and Sadie Mae; niece Claire and nephew Matthew and countless students and musicians everywhere.
