Deacon John F. "Jack" Carney

December 29, 1941 — July 7, 2017

After a lengthy journey, Deacon John F. "Jack" Carney passed away on Friday, July 7, 2017, surrounded by his family. Jack was born in Youngstown, Ohio on December 29, 1941. He was the son of Joseph P. and Virginia (Sullivan) Carney.

Jack was a graduate of Ursuline High School in 1959, and participated in the first football game between Mooney and Ursuline. After contemplating the religious life, he chose to embrace a career in education. He graduated from Youngstown College (now known as Youngstown State University) in 1965 with a B.S. in Elementary Education. He went on to complete a Master of Education from Westminster in 1967, and completed post-graduate work at the University of Akron.

Deacon Carney began his teaching career as a 5th grade teacher, and was the first male teacher in his building in Austintown Local Schools. After teaching, he served as principal and superintendent in several school districts, including nine years as superintendent of Streetsboro City Schools. Upon retirement, he returned to Catholic education by serving as principal of St. Patrick's School in Kent. He also returned to religious life, and was ordained a Deacon in the Youngstown Diocese in 2000.

All who knew Jack will cherish the memory of his booming voice and infectious laugh. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Carol (Gray) Carney; son, Jeremy (Chrystina) of Aliso Viejo, CA; grandchildren, Adam Longo of Cleveland, Alexander, Katarina, and Kaia of Aliso Viejo, CA; sister, Mary Ann (Richard) Toke of Woodbridge, VA; and sister-in-law, Janice Welch of Canfield, OH. A daughter, Karianne, preceded him in death.

Services will be at St. Joan of Arc Church in Streetsboro. Calling hours will be on Thursday, July 13 from 4:00-7:00 PM, and a funeral will be celebrated on Friday, July 14 at 10:00 AM. Jack will be buried at Standing Rock Cemetery in Kent.
