Doris Mae Birkner, 90, of Kent, died Friday, February 20, 2015 at Akron City Hospital Medical Center.

She was born June 13, 1924 on the family farm near Carbury, North Dakota, to Bernhard and Alma (Seter) Wall. She attended the North Dakota School of Forestry at Bottineau where she majored in horticulture. After graduation, she moved to Colma, California to work at Rod McLellan Orchid Nursery. There she met John Martin Birkner at a folk dance and they were married on January 15, 1949. The couple moved back to John's hometown of Kent, Ohio in 1955 and eventually settled in Twin Lakes, where Doris continued to grow orchids.

She was a member of the United Church of Christ and was active with the League of Women Voters and the Portage County Parkinson's Support Group. She volunteered with Robinson Memorial Hospital, the Portage County Clothing Center, and Kent Social Services hot meals program. She served as a Camp Fire Girls leader, and enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking and bridge. Her family and friends particularly remember her pies, buns and Norwegian specialties. She loved sports of all kinds, and besides being a diehard Indians, Browns and Cavaliers fan, she was a long-time bowler and participated in softball and volleyball leagues. She also played varsity basketball at Bottineau High School.

She is survived by her son, David Birkner (Carole LaMond) of Wayland, Massachusetts; daughters, Sandra Birkner (David Crout) of Portland, Oregon and Sheryl Birkner of Oakland, California; stepson, John Birkner (Noel) of Los Altos, California; four grandchildren; one great granddaughter; brothers, John (Joan) Wall of Fargo, North Dakota and Kenneth Wall of New Hope, Minnesota; and sister, Ione Skarphol of Bottineau, North Dakota. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Birkner, in 2000; her parents; and brothers, Harold, Howard, and Russell; and by her sister, Lorraine. She also leaves caring friends, sister-in-law, Carol Birkner of Kent and Joan Eshler of Stow.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, April 25, at Kent United Church of Christ, 1400 E. Main Street, Kent, Ohio. The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the service. Private burial will be held at Standing Rock Cemetery.
