Doris Selma (Friedman) Roe

Doris Selma Roe, age 98, of Tallmadge, OH, passed away on Saturday, December 16, 2023 at her home.

Doris was born September 11, 1925 in Pittsburgh, PA to the late Frank and Lyda (Schafer) Friedman.

Doris affectionally called “Muttma” for the past 50 years lived life to the fullest. She was a pioneer in women’s sports, winning multiple individual titles as well as team titles during her league Bowling in the 50’s and 60’s. She once even competed in a men's tournament and took home 1st place, which was a brand-new car. Her love of competitive sports really never really faded, after Bowling for over 35 years she found a new passion and started a women's Golf league. Doris and her partners won many League Championships and of course Doris aced a hole in one during her time competing.

Surprisingly, playing sports was not even her main joy in life. It was simply being around her family. She loved teaching her family the importance of life’s lessons. Always tell the truth. Always do your best. And my favorite was always play to win. It was ok to lose as long as you gave it 100%. Honesty was a big priority on her list of character. She was always honest and if you really wanted to know the truth beware, because she was HONEST.

After Doris retired from managing several bowling alleys in Summit and Portage counties, she was not willing to just sit back and relax. Doris and Sherry decided to see what it was like to watch a couple kids after school. Well, those couple kids from 1980 turned into over 60 kids over the next 35 years. She treated them all like they were her own.  Family was always a strong word in Muttma’s vocabulary. She was the Matriarch of not only the Roe family, but she was Muttma to literally hundreds and hundreds of people. God truly gained an Angel in the early morning of December 16th. Oh, how you will be missed sweet Muttma.

She is survived by her daughter, Sherryl Kunze, daughter in law, Patricia Roe, grandsons, Rusty Kunze, (Angie), Robert Roe, Scott Roe; Granddaughter Lisa Voss (Andy). Great Grandsons; Tanner Roe, Parker Roe, Jackson Kunze and Zander Kunze and Great Grand Daughters Georgia Voss, Randall Voss, and Ava Rinella. she was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years. Calling hours will be held 3:30 PM - 5:30 PM Thursday, December 21, 2023 at Bissler & Sons Funeral Home and Crematory, 628 W. Main St. Kent, Ohio 44240.  Funeral services will be held 12:00 PM Friday, December 22, 2023, at Bissler & Sons Funeral Home and Crematory with Celebrant Kevin O’Brien officiating.  Burial will follow at Standing Rock Cemetery.  Memorials may be made to (Charity of Choice).
