Earl R. Childers, age 90, of Kent, WWII Veteran and member of the "The Greatest Generation" passed from this world on Wednesday, January 22, 2014.
Earl was born September 14, 1923, in Martins Ferry, Ohio to the late John and Annie Childers. Earl enlisted in the Army Air Corps serving in the Pacific Theatre as a Sergeant and gunner on the B-24 Liberator from 1943-1945. He retired as a supervisor at Ametek/Lamb Electric in Kent after 42 years of service. After retirement he worked for Don Joseph Toyota. He was a member of the Kent Elks #1377 and enjoyed gardening, card games, bowling, Ohio State Football and Kent State sports.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Anita in 2012 after 67 years of marriage and by his brother Gordon Childers in 2007. Earl is survived by daughters, Sandra (Thomas) Ward of Westerville, and Candice (Donald) DeFluiter of Marlboro; son Jonathan Childers of Akron; grandchildren, Jeff (Stacey) Ward, Kelly (Andy) Shenigo and Hayley Childers; and six great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Margaret Childers of Elyria; brother-in-law Donald (Flora) Wiley of Kent, two nephews and six nieces and their families.
A private memorial service will be held at Bissler & Sons Funeral Home with celebrant Kevin O'Brien officiating. Earl will be laid to rest at Ohio Western Reserve Cemetery in Rittman, Ohio.
