Born on May 14th, 1918, Earl died peacefully from complications of Parkinson's Disease at Altercare Center in Brimfield, Ohio, on November 16, 2011.
He was a career Air Force officer, having graduated from West Point and serving in the South Pacific during World War II as an Army combat engineer. He served the remainder of his 28-year military career as an intelligence officer primarily in the Pentagon and later in Texas and Alaska. As a young man growing up in Washington D.C. he attended a private boy's school. A serious and brilliant student, relaxation for him consisted of long hours sailing a small skiff on the Potomac River and hand-crafting exquisite carvings and metal objects. He met his "one and only" Lesley Burchell at cotillion classes and courted her from his adjacent Washington D.C. neighborhood. Upon graduation from West Point, in June 1940, they married. Very soon, Earl was deployed to the Pacific Theater, where he saw Lesley only in brief visits over the next four years. Their first two children, Lesley and Earl, were born during that time, followed by Linda soon after the war ended.
Apart from work and family, his favorite hobbies were hunting, muzzle loading pistol competitive shooting, and antique replica gun-making. He was an avid traveler, camper, canoeist, and biker, with his last bike ride, while in his late 70's, from Cumberland, Maryland to Washington D.C. on the C & O Canal towpath. He loved spending time with children and grandchildren in his later years, teaching them some of the handcrafting techniques learned in his childhood.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lesley in 2005; and is survived by daughters, Lesley Lenberg of Gainesville, Florida and Linda (John ) Jaje of Atlanta, Georgia; son, Earl (Kay) McFarland of Kent, Ohio; 7 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. His nieces, nephew, and friends also love this remarkable man and will miss him dearly.
Memorial services will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church, Georgetown Parish, Washington D.C., on December 10th at 11:00 am. The family would like to thank his Washington caregivers Kathleen Weaver and Esther Ragoo, and the staff of Altercare, Kent, Ohio, for their loving care the past four years. In lieu of contributions, we would encourage a loving visit to a friend or family member.
