Edith Hinds West, 97, of Cleveland Heights and Walden, died Saturday, November 26, 2011 at Judson Park Retirement Center.
She was born December 21, 1913 in Kent, to George W. and Bessie (Randall) Hinds. She was an honors graduate of Lakewood High School. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Flora Stone Mather College in 1935. In 1961 she received a master's degree from CWRU in Finance and Banking. She began working at National City Bank in the investment department. In 1967 she became the first woman member of the Cleveland Society of Chartered Financial Analysts. She affiliated with Prescott Ball Turben in their institutional department selling securities to mutual funds and banks throughout the country.
In addition to her professional career Edith was president of the Flora Stone Mather Alumni Association and Fortnightly Musical Club. She was a member of the Cleveland Astronomical Society of WRU and the Woman's Council of Hiram College. She sang in the choirs of Forest Hills Presbyterian Church and The Church of Aurora. She was the collaborator and presenter of sixteen travelogue slide presentations of her travels around the world.
She is survived by nieces and nephews, Crawford (Karen) Thoburn of Aurora, NY, George Thoburn of Lakewood, Mary Tame of Lincoln Park, MI, Isabella Dorr of South Euclid, Gay Janis of Cleveland Heights, Randall (Kim) Scheuer of Nashville, TN, Beverly (David) Oberlin of Massillon, Russell Eichman of Surf City, NC and Marilyn Kretchman of Cleveland. She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Beck West.
Graveside services will be held 11 AM Friday, December 16th at Standing Rock Cemetery with Rev. Mary T. Tame officiating. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions may be made in her memory to Judson Retirement Community 2181 Ambleside Drive, Cleveland, Ohio 44106. Bissler & Sons Funeral Home and Crematory are handling the arrangements.
