Edward J. Dolbow

April 5, 1929 — March 19, 2023

Kent

Ed Dolbow, 93, died peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family, on March 19, 2023.  He was born April 5, 1929, to the late Robert and Julia (Patrick) Dolbow.

Ed graduated from Kent Roosevelt High School in 1947. He earned a B.S. in Education from Kent State University, and later went on to study at Akron University earning a Master’s Degree in Secondary School Administration.

From the age of 12, Ed demonstrated a strong work ethic. He worked many different jobs to support his family and finance his college education. Ed taught for 30 years in the Akron Public School System. At the time of his retirement, he taught government and was the athletic director for Kenmore High School. During his teaching career, Ed also coached track, basketball, football, and refereed football. Knowledge of current events and sports information was a lifelong passion so the qualities of being a teacher remained nonetheless.

Ed met his wife, Joan Grove, in high school. They raised five children in whom they instilled the values of integrity, moral ethics, and the importance of education. After Joan’s unexpected death in 1982, Ed met Alice Hendryx and they were companions until her death in 2013.

Ed and Alice traveled to many wonderful places. Africa was his favorite trip, partly because his son and oldest daughter were part of the group. Later, he gave a presentation on Africa which to his surprise was well received by his twin grandchildren’s grade school class. Ed’s greatest joy in later life was his grandchildren and great grandchildren, one of whom was born in January 2023. He attended many events involving his grandchildren and great grandchildren, especially soccer games.

Ed is survived by five children: Kyle (Sue) Dolbow, Marsha Dolbow, Judy Dolbow, Sally (Mark) Myers, Carol (Ken) Long; five grandchildren: Tim (Gill) Myers, Craig (Sarah) Myers, Kelsey (Ed) Armentrout, Kyle (Raquel) Long, Coletun Long; three great grandchildren: Kailyn Myers, Liam Myers, and Kenna Long. Also surviving are nieces and nephews of the Rohal family, and special friend, Debbie Hendryx, who visited him weekly.

Special thanks to Akron City Hospital staff on 5 East, especially nurse Cassandra. Also, special thanks to the staff on 3 East, Palliative Care, especially Dr. Chandler, nurses Becca and Andy, whose compassion and support were invaluable.

Gratitude beyond words to the entire staff at KentRidge Senior Living. The year he lived there was full of happy memories. Ed often said that not only did the staff provide excellent care, they were his friends.

Per Ed’s wishes, cremation will take place with no formal funeral service.

We will miss you dad, grandpa, gpa, but your legacy lives on in stories you told throughout almost 94 years of life. A special favorite was the mastoid story where the milkman saved your life. There are also many dad sayings and quotes such as “life isn’t fair”, “two Ed’s are better than one”, which will be handed-down in loving remembrance of you.

Services in care of Bissler and Sons Funeral Home and Crematory.
