Edward L. Proske

December 6, 1943 — December 6, 2014

Edward L. Proske, 71, of Franklin Township, died Saturday, December 6, 2014 at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna.

He was born October 2, 1943 in Atlanta, GA to Edward and Catherine (Sirkle) Proske. Ed had a genuine love and interest for all people and things. He was especially fond of learning new things and teaching others. Ed was raised in Anderson Township, Cincinnati and came to Kent in the late 1960's to attend Kent State University. His plans changed when he began working at Lewis' Market, where he met his wife Rebecca. Together they bought and managed the market for 11 years. Anyone ordering meat at the market remembers Ed behind the counter, ready for any and all conversation. Ed and Becky moved to a small farm and raised 4 children. After the loss of Lewis' market to a fire, he began teaching at TDDS. He worked long hours to ensure his students' success. He enjoyed talking and spending time with his coworkers and good friends Larry, CR, and Charlie. Outside of work, his hobbies on the farm included bee-keeping, gardening, making wine, caring for the orchard, and raising sheep and goats. We all enjoyed the fruits of these labors. Ed was especially fond of his grandchildren, always involving and teaching them. Picking blueberries, pumpkins, apples, and playing piano were his favorite activities with them. His love of classical music and books filled our home. His genuine interest in learning led him, and his family, through an untold number of chaotic adventures.

He is survived by his wife, Rebecca (Swauger) Proske; son, Matt (Mariana) Proske; daughters, Diana (Jerry Turcotte) Proske, Jessica (Shands) Plymale, and Emily (Ed) Ickes; grandchildren, Valentina Proske, Emmett, Owen, Evan and Wyatt Plymale, Max and Simon Turcotte; brothers, Robert Proske and Louis Proske; mother-in-law, Patricia Swauger; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Robert and Karen Swauger, Paul and Rebecca Swauger, Beth and Jack Weiss, and Carol and John Dorscher. He was preceded in death by his parents; father-in-law, Leonard Swauger; and brother-in-law, Kenneth Swauger.

We would like to extend special thanks to the staff at Robinson Memorial Hospital and Mubashir, Marquinez, & Rehman.

Calling hours will be held 6-8 PM Tuesday, December 9th at Bissler & Sons Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to RMH Foundation-Hospice, POB 1204, Ravenna, OH 44266-1204.
