Edward Ullinger

October 13, 1923 — February 13, 2015

Ed Ullinger slipped away peacefully on Friday, February 13, 2015, to continue his 68 year love affair with his loving wife, Clara. Born on Saturday, October 13, 1923 in Manhattan, NY, Ed grew up with his younger brothers and sister in Hoboken, NJ and Jersey City, NJ. Growing up, he helped run the family bake shop in Hoboken, until he went apprentice as a machinist. During WWII, he was stationed in McKeesport, PA, teaching "Rosie the Riveter" how to operate machinery in munitions plants. This is where he met his bride, Clara. They ran off together, and were married in Jersey City on June 9, 1945. After Ed's discharge from the army, they moved back to the Pittsburgh/McKeesport area, where they lived in West Mifflin, McKeesport, and Pleasant Hills. Ed went to work at Fisher Body (General Motors) in West Mifflin. He went on to become a tool and die maker, and eventually became the tool room supervisor. After he retired in 1983, they moved to Seminole FL, where they lived for 25 years, until moving to Kent in 2013.

Ed was an avid golfer and enjoyed woodworking and ice skating arm-in-arm with Clara. After moving to Florida, they often walked hand in hand on the beach, where they could usually be found in the evenings, enjoying the sunset. He loved sharing food and conversation with friends and family, and was always ready to mix a Manhattan for his guests.

Ed is joining Clara in heaven, who passed away in 2013, as well as his brothers, Bob and Dick; and sister, Margie. He is survived by his sons, Rick and Rob; daughters-in-law (whom Ed often said were more like daughters), Gail and Cathy; granddaughters, Jaime, Elizabeth, Stephanie, Christi, and Jessica; grandsons, Will, Steve and Mike; and 5 great-grandchildren. Ed's family would like to thank the amazing staffs of The Gables at Kent Ridge and Harbor Light Hospice for their fantastic, gentle, and loving care.

Condolences may be sent to the family, c/o Bissler & Sons Funeral Home, 628 West Main Street, Kent, OH 44240, or at www.bisslerandsons.com/obituaries. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Ed's name to Harbor Light Hospice, 25 S. Main Street, Suite 7, Munroe Falls, OH 44262. A Mass and celebration of Ed's life will take place at Newman Center, 1424 Horning Rd., Kent, on Tuesday February 17th at 10:30am with a light lunch to follow at Kent Presbyterian Church, 1456 E. Summit St., Kent.
