Eileen (Hawley) Manion, 91, died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2014, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna, Ohio.
Born May 10, 1923, in New York City, Eileen was preceded in death by husband Keron Manion and Fredericka Goll, her cousin and lifelong friend. Eileen is survived by daughter Eileen Carolyn Manion; son in-law Norman Arthur Fischer, both residents of Kent, Ohio, and granddaughters Deirdre Carolyn, of Minneapolis; Eileen Maeve, of Kent, Ohio; and Kiera Sean Manion-Fischer, of Oakland, Ca.
Eileen experienced the effects of the Great Depression and raised her daughter as a single parent after Keron died at 31. These challenges taught her stubbornness, stoicism and frugality, traits that served her well throughout her long life. Following her husband's death, Eileen worked as a research librarian for Mobil Oil Company in New York City, then, in the 1970s, moved to Pompano Beach, Fla., and worked as a librarian at the Broward County Library. She never remarried. Eileen moved to KentRidge, in Kent, Ohio, in 2005, to be closer to her family. She enjoyed murder mysteries, musicals, travel, good food and good Scotch. Eileen was an inspiration to her family and will be keenly missed.
Calling hours will be held 7-9 PM Wednesday, October 8th at Bissler & Sons Funeral Home and Crematory in Kent, where funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, October 9th with Father Richard Pentello officiating.
