Elizabeth Sue "Bettye" George

August 23, 1923 — February 17, 2011

Elizabeth "Bettye" Sue George of Kent died peacefully in her sleep on February 17th at her home after a long battle with congestive heart failure and Alzheimers.

She was born in Sandusky on August 23, 1923 and spent her early years in Sandusky and Cleveland. She moved to Kent in the 1936 where she met Harry the love of her life whom she eventually started to date while he was in the Marine Corps. She graduated from Roosevelt High School and attended Kent State University. Bettye had fond memories of her many friends from the war-time years when she lived on Earl Avenue and the post-war years that followed on Highland Avenue with all of the neighborhood children attending DePeyster Elementary. She lived the last half of her life on Major's Lane and Stonewater Drive. She loved and enjoyed being a homemaker, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother as well as doing the weekly cross word puzzles. She was the winner of the City of Kent "name the parkway" contest where she contributed the name Haymaker Parkway.

She is survived by her husband, Harry A. George to whom she was married for 66 years; and a sister, Maralee Rumberg of Park Village Assisted Living Center in Dover. She was the mother of Robert (Ann) of Conyers Georgia, Michael (Ann) of Los Altos, California, Cynthia (David ) Hall of Kent, and Steve (Robin) of Estero, Florida; grandchildren, Andrew George of Germany, Jennifer (Rob) Case of Dublin, and Jack Spelman of Kent; and three great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert W. and Donna B. (nee Grady) Meyer of Kent.

Calling hours will be held 2-4 P.M. Sunday, February 20th at Bissler & Sons Funeral Home in Kent followed immediately by memorial services at 4:00 PM with Pastor Douglas Fidler officiating. Private burial will be held at Standing Rock Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross (http://www.summitcounty.redcross.org/), 609 W.
