Evelyn Lorena Allen

May 23, 1922 — August 29, 2012

Evelyn L. Allen, 90, of Kent died Wednesday, August 29, 2012 with her daughters, Joyce and Karen, by her side.

She was born May 23, 1922 in Zelienople, PA to Fred and Lorena (Zinkham) Wagner. At 17 she and her family moved to Ohio, first to Salem and then Akron. In 1947, she married Nelson Allen, and the couple settled in Cuyahoga Falls where Evelyn worked as a secretary for the Cuyahoga Falls City Schools and Nelson for the U.S. Postal Service. Upon retirement, she and Nelson relocated to North Port, FL to enjoy 28 years of sunshine. Every year, however, they returned "home" to Kent and environs to escape Florida's summer heat, justifying their "homelessness" by house sitting for friends. Every year, as well, they returned to celebrate the Christmas season with family and friends.

After Nelson's death, Evelyn continued to live in Florida for three more years, returning to Ohio in 2009. Wherever she lived, she always exhibited her strength, determination, and desire to do the right thing. She was an expert seamstress, avid reader, dedicated swimmer and walker, and a biking enthusiast. She continued that same fierce determination and pride in independence while residing in assisted living, whether putting mile after mile on the stationery bike, walking the perimeter, or encouraging her fellow residents in physical activity. Something of a card shark, playing euchre made any gathering perfect -- especially if the cards went her way.

Always there for her daughters, she gave them her love and provided them with the opportunities that helped prepare them for their personal and professional success and happiness. Her grandson, William, was her pride and joy, and she contributed greatly to the outstanding young man he is today.

Evelyn is survived by daughters Joyce Allen and Karen Allen-Hoffman of Kent; grandson, William Hoffman of Kent; daughter in spirit, Becky Lemasters of Kent; nephew, Don Heath (Lori) of Tallmadge; and two nephews and two nieces out of state. She was preceded in death by Nelson, her husband of 59 years; son-in-law, George Hoffman; parents; sister, Ethel Heath; and brother, Joe Wagner.

A celebration of Evelyn's life will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, September 29, at the Kent United Church of Christ where friends may call from 10:00 am until the time of service. In keeping with that celebration, attendees are asked to wear casual, colorful clothes to share in the joy of a life well and fully lived.

The family thanks the Kent Ridge community for making Evelyn's transition from Floridian to Ohioan a gracious and rewarding experience. Memorial contributions may be made to KentRidge at Golden Pond or to Summa Hospice.
