Geneva Wood-McGrew, 97, of Kent, passed away peacefully Monday, November 10, 2014 at Hospice Care Center in Copley.
She was born October 31, 1917 in Tellico Plains, TN to Wyatt and Myrtle (Patterson) Roberson. She was a long time resident of Kent, graduating from Kent Roosevelt High School. She earned a Bachelor's Degree at Kent State University and was a member of the Alpha Sigma Tau sorority and alumnae. Geneva worked at Kent State for 23 years as a secretary to the President of the University. She was an active member of the Kent United Methodist Church, Coterie I and served in many organizations such as Toastmasters, Mary Reed Circle, and the Kent Historical Society. Geneva was an active volunteer and enjoyed giving back to the community. She volunteered with the church, Meals on Wheels, the Kent State Museum and many other organizations. She was an avid Bridge player, belonging to the same Bridge club for 60 years and was a world traveler. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family and she cherished the time she spent with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She is survived by son, Chester E. Wood III of Kent; daughters, Barbara Wood of Streetsboro, Bettie (Darcie) Salmon of Wasilla, AK and Beverly Moore of Big Lake, AK; grandchildren, Tamara Bernadine of Kent, Wendy Weaver of Tallmadge, Lonea McGowen of Wasilla, AK, Todd Moore of Colorado, Arista Wood of Suffield and Erin Wood of Kent; thirteen great grandchildren; and sister, Catherine (Jim) Martell of Maryland. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Chester E. Wood Jr; second husband, Richard McGrew; brother, Leo Roberson; and daughter-in-law, Katy Wood.
Geneva was a beacon of class and grace and will be sincerely missed by all who knew her.
Calling hours will be held 5-7 PM Friday, November 14th at Bissler & Sons Funeral Home in Kent. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, November 15th at United Methodist Church of Kent with Rev. Dr. David Palmer and Rev. Douglas Denton officiating.
