Gordon W. Marsh, 89, of Kent, died Monday, January 24, 2011 at KentRidge at Golden Pond in Kent.
He was born July 18, 1921 in Meadville, PA to William and Helen (Kruger) Marsh. The family moved to Kent when he was six years old. Gordon was a proud graduate of Kent's Theodore Roosevelt High School serving as student body president, class of 1938. He then attended Kent State University until interrupted by WW II. During the war he was stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, assigned to Ship Salvage and Repair Company in charge of salvaging sunken ships and retrieving lost supplies and sailors.
Upon returning from the war he worked at Twin Coach where he met his wife, Florence Aurand, whom he married in 1948. They were happily married for 42 years, until she passed away in 1990.
For the past 20 years of his life he has cherished and enjoyed the companionship of his wonderful friend, Shirley Dubetz, with whom he has traveled the world. They have shared their love of sports by attending and watching many sporting events together, including Ohio State, West Virginia, and Notre Dame, but most of all they supported their Kent State Golden Flashes. Gordon often bragged of being a loyal fan of Kent Roosevelt and Kent State for over 70 years!
He is survived by his son, Dr. Gordon (Cindy) Marsh II of Kent; step-daughter, Andrea Kramer of Seattle, WA; grandchildren, Mariah (Dan) Desatoff of Park City, UT, Weston (Catherine) Marsh of Burbank, CA, Amanda (Nate) Kessler of Salt Lake City, UT, Adam Marsh of Kent, Sherry Gillespie of Byesville, OH, Mike Slike and Robin Slike both of Cleveland, Nikki Owens of Arkansas, and Danielle Garcia of Spokane, WA, 17 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; step-brother, Kent Marsh of Toledo, and companion Shirley Dubetz of Kent.
Gordon, always a happy and loveable soul, will be sorely missed by all, especially his family.
The family will receive friends 6-8 P.M. Thursday, January 27, 2011 at Bissler & Sons Funeral Home in Kent. Private services and burial will be held at Crown Hill Cemetery. Contributions in Gordon's memory may be made to RMH Foundation-Hospice, POB 1204, Ravenna, OH 44266-1204.
