Grace L. Lowry, age 86, of Brimfield, passed away on Saturday, April 1, 2023. She was born October 1, 1936 to Bert and Alta DeVos in Ravenna, Ohio. They moved to Kent in 1940.
Grace attended DePeyster Grad School and delivered papers for the Akron B.J. on Franklin Ave. from 1947-1951. While attending Kent Roosevelt H.S. from 1950-1954, she worked at Harold’s Market and McCrorys’ 5&10 on Water Street. Upon graduation in 1954, she became employed at Davey Tree Expert Company as a secretary and stenographer for 2 years.
She met the love of her life, Verne K. Lowry in 1952 and they were married on November 20, 1954. They made their home in Kent and Stow, and moved to Brimfield in 1961 where they purchased a home.
Grace and Verne became parents of 5 children, 9 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren. Grace became the church secretary for Tree City Baptist Church--Victory Baptist Temple in Brimfield, where she attended and worked for 17 years. She also was employed by Stambaugh Hardware in Stow for 7 years and retired in 2001 when they went out of business.
She loved working in her yard planting flowers and bushes until she became ill and could no longer do it. She also loved collecting music boxes and ceramic owls and owls for her yard and garden. Grace was an avid fan of all Cleveland sports teams—her beloved Cavaliers, Indians, and Browns.
Grace was preceded in death by her husband, Verne; sons, Richard and John Lowry; brothers, Albert and John DeVos; brother-in-law, Robert (Eva) Lowry; son-in-law, Michael Bailey Sr.; and nephew, Albert DeVos Jr.
She is survived by her children, Cheryl A. Bailey (John Naus) of Akron, William R. (Pam) Lowry of Stow, and Kathy Sklare of Deerfield Beach, FL; and special son-in-law, Chuck (Sheryl) Sklare of FLA. Her 8 grandchildren, Nicole Sklare (Dave Sopko) of Northfield, Nick Sklare of FLA, Stefanie (Josh) DeMuth of Yuma, AZ, Michael Bailey Jr. of Akron, Thomas Lowry of Cuy. Falls, Jonathan Lowry of Akron, Matthew (Jennifer) Lowry of FLA, and step-granddaughter, Megan (Brian) Moore of VA. Many great-grandchildren, and nieces, Janet DeVos and Terri (John) Crawford.
Per Grace’s request, there will be no services and cremation will take place. Memorials may be sent to Bissler and Sons Funeral Home, 628 W. Main Street, Kent, or directly to the family.
