January 26, 1927 — June 20, 2017

He has told you, O man, what is good and what does the Lord require of you. But to do justice, to love kindness and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8

Harold Walker, Jr. was born January 26, 1927 in Birmingham, Alabama and died in his home in Kent, Ohio on June 20, 2017. The world is a more beautiful place because of his life. Always an environmentalist, he was often seen riding his bicycle across town and was known to some as the "Healthy Transportation Man." His joyful spirit came through while singing hymns both in church, and around the piano with family. Every summer, he tended vegetables in his backyard garden, supplying his wife, Janet, with an endless supply of green beans and squash. Wherever he would travel, he usually had a dense book of theology (well underlined and annotated) close at hand.

Harold was thoroughly devoted to his family. He cherished his wife of 56 years, Janet Trostrud Walker, and four children, Julia Walker Wyson, Johanna Walker, Hal Walker III, and Caroline Walker Boyle. He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren, Hallie Walker, Charles Wyson, Anna and Hunter Boyle; and his sons-in-law, Edmund Wyson and Tod Boyle. He was Uncle Harold to Amie and Fred Pierre and sons, Lucas and Leo.

Always at ease with the person before him, he had a wonderful ability to make people feel welcome and part of community. He connected with anyone he spoke to with his empathetic nature, gentle questions and listening ear.

A graduate of Birmingham Southern College and Louisville Theological Seminary, Harold did graduate work at University of Chicago, and went on to minister many churches including First Presbyterian Church of Chicago, the Kent Presbyterian Church, and the Covenant/Margaret Park Churches in Akron. His early years as a pastor were spent on the south side of Chicago, where he was integrally involved in the fight for social and racial justice. In Kent, he focused much of his energy on environmental causes. An active member of the Kent Environmental Council, he founded the Friday Morning Environmental Round Table, and was recently honored with the KEC Edith Chase Award for Conservation.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, June 24 at 3:00 pm at the Kent Presbyterian Church (1456 E. Summit Street, Kent). A reception will follow in Grazier Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Presbyterian World Mission Fund (presbyterianmission.org), the Kent Environmental Council (kentenvironment.org), or Summa Health Hospice Foundation (summahealth.org/foundation)
