Helen I Medley, 88, of Stow, died Saturday, November 18, 2017, at Stow Glen Retirement Center in Stow.

She was born June 30, 1929 in Johnstown, PA to the late Robert and Sara (Tait) Medley. She graduated from Johnstown High School in 1947. She received her Bachelor of Science Cum Laude from Grove City College in 1951. She received a PhD in mathematics from Case Institute of Technology in 1967.

Helen was a life-long educator. She began her teaching work in Champion before dedicating her career as an instructor and administrator at Kent State University. Her formal teaching at Kent St. began in 1958 and she retired as an Associate Professor in 1983. Thereafter Helen was active until March of 2017 in performing technical review of mathematical textbooks. She was a preferred colleague to a number of textbook authors and publishers. Helen's influence in the education field led to one of her longtime students from high school and college to create the Helen I. Medley Outstanding Teacher Award that is offered annually by the Texas Tech University Department of Mathematics and Statistics. The award is given to "outstanding middle and high school mathematics teachers who have made a difference in the lives of their students." Helen was active in her church, Kent Presbyterian, where she sang in the choir for a number of years. She was also a servant to her local community, volunteering to deliver bread to Kent Social Services, provider of hot meals to low income residents. She was a decades-long cancer survivor.

She is survived by her nephews, Drew Urbassik of Murietta, CA, Mark Urbassik of Pittsburgh, PA, and Kent Urbassik of Quebec, Canada; and nine great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Jane Urbassik, and Longtime Companion, Sandra Mae Rohrbach.

Memorial service will be held Tuesday, November 28th at 10 AM at Kent Presbyterian Church with Aaron Meadows officiating. Final resting place will be at Grandview Mausoleum in Johnstown, PA.

Special thank you to Harbor Light Hospice. Donations may be made to Kent Presbyterian Church, 1456 E Summit St, Kent, OH 44240. Bissler & Sons Funeral Home and Crematory are handling the arrangements.
