James J. Best Jr.

James J. Best Jr., 85, of Kent, passed away on Tuesday, November 5, 2024 at Longmeadow Care Center. He was born in Chicago, IL on December 14, 1938 and earned his PhD in political science from the University of North Carolina. Jim was a political science professor for 30 years, the last 27 years of his career was spent at Kent State University. 

He was an avid antique book collector with the intention of opening a bookstore when he retired. As he grew older, he became the caretaker for his wife and donated his book collection to the Kent State Library. There is a section on the 12th floor dedicated to his collection. 

Jim was preceded in death by his loving wife Lynda Best on December 10, 2017; his father James J. Best Sr.; mother Valerie Wyrick; stepfather Burl Wyrick and stepbrother Bernard Wyrick.

He leaves his sons, Bryan (Lori) Best and Brett (Gwenn) Best; and grandson Donald Best.

In honoring his wishes, James will be cremated and a graveside service for him and Lynda will be held on Friday, November 15, 2024 at 1:00PM at Standing Rock Cemetery.
