James F. Cooney

James F. Cooney died on October 11, 2018 at his home in Kent. He was born in Lancaster, September 22, 1928, the elder son of Paul A. and Mildred R. Cooney. He graduated from St. Mary's High School in Lancaster, received a B.A. in Philosophy and Classical Languages from St. Charles Borromeo College in Columbus (1950), an S.T.L. in Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome (1954); M.A. and Ph.D. in English from The Ohio State University (1966).
Ordained a Roman Catholic priest in Rome (1953), his priestly orders were recognized by Bishop John Burt of the Episcopal Diocese of Ohio in 1974.
He taught at St. Charles Preparatory School and College, Columbus (1957-1966) and Ohio Dominican College (1966-1968) where he was also Dean of Men.
He was a member of the Kent State University English department (1968-1996) and Assistant to the Chair of the department (1970-1973); he became associate director, assistant dean, and Dean of the Salem Campus (1974-1993).
He served the Episcopal Diocese of Ohio in various capacities. He was supply priest in over forty parishes. As interim rector or priest in charge, he assisted the parishes of Epiphany, Euclid; St Matthews, Brecksville; St. John's, Youngstown; St. Christopher's, Gates Mills; Church of Our Savior, Akron; St. Paul's, Medina; St. Thomas, Berea; and Christ Church, Shaker Heights. He was a member of the diocesan examining chaplains and the Bishop's Advisory Commission on Applicants to the Ministry.
In Kent, he was an original member of the Kent State University Orchestra Society board (1974-1988) and served as its vice president for several years.
Survivors include his wife, Sondra Miley Cooney of Kent; daughter, Margaret (James Spilsbury) Cooney of Lakewood; son Charles (Whitnie Crown) Cooney of Chicago, IL; granddaughter Katherine Spilsbury; sister, Virginia Jette of Dayton, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Philip Cooney.
Calling hours will be Friday, October 26 from 4 to 7 PM at Bissler & Sons Funeral Home, 628 West Main Street, Kent; the funeral service will take place at 11:00 AM, Saturday, October 27 at Christ Episcopal Church, 118 South Mantua Street, Kent. Officiants will be the Rt. Rev. Mark Hollingsworth, Jr, Bishop of Ohio; the Rt. Rev. Arthur B. Williams, retired Assisting Bishop of Ohio, and Rev. Julie Blake Fisher.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Christ Church Kent Choral Scholarship Fund, 118 South Mantua Street, Kent 44240; the Kent State University Orchestra Society, Treasurer, 210 Overlook Drive, Kent 44240; or the Bishop's Annual Appeal of the Diocese of Ohio, 2230 Euclid Avenue Cleveland 44115.
