James W. Garrett, 89, of Twin Lakes, passed away Friday, April 20, 2012 at his home.
He was born November 19, 1922 in Akron to Charles Columbus and Freda Augusta (Sanderson) Garrett. He was a lieutenant and pilot in the Army Air Corps during WWII. In the 1950's he began his career in the auto industry as a general manager at Hall/Dobbs Auto Sales. During the 1960's, Jim was the owner/operator of Garrett Dodge in Akron and in the 1970's founded Southland AMC/Jeep in Middleburg Heights, which at the time was the largest AMC/Jeep dealership in the country. In the 1980's and 90's he owned and operated Garrett Olds-Cadillac, Inc. in Kent. During his lifetime, Jim was a member of Yusef Khan Grotto, the Rotary Club of Kent, Free Masons and an officer in the Cleveland Automobile Dealers Association.
He is survived by his son, Joseph K. (Linda) Garrett of Valley City; daughters, Janet S. (Jorge) Decardenas of Kent and Jill E. (Gregory) Hoeting of Cincinnati; daughter-in-law, Becky Garrett of Akron; and grandchildren, Michael Ventress, Emily Decardenas, Thomas Decardenas, Katie (Alex) Huckriede, Matt Garrett, William Decardenas, Justin Hoeting, and Evan Hoeting. He was preceded in death by his wife, Billie June Garrett; son, Michael D. Garrett; brother, Charles M. Garrett; and sisters, Lois Wise, Pauline Buterbaugh, and Patricia Piper.
Private family service. Bissler & Sons Funeral Home and Crematory are handling the arrangements. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Summit County Children's Services, 264 S. Arlington Street, Akron, OH 44306.
