James Whitecross Wemyss

July 25, 1931 — March 12, 2015

James Whitecross Wemyss of Brimfield died March 12, 2015 at Akron City Hospital after a short Illness. He was 83. Mr. Wemyss was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on July 25, 1931 to James and Isabella Wemyss. He came to the United States on the Queen Mary in 1955 with his family and settled in Akron. He married Shirley Kenreich, the woman who "made him feel at home in the U.S.," in 1957. He worked as a draftsman for URS for over 40 years, and enjoyed showing off the bridges that he helped design. He loved golf, was a member of the Kent Lions Club and was a highly involved member of Faith Lutheran Church in Kent. He also enjoyed volunteering his time at Robinson Memorial Hospital. He was known for his sense of humor, his Scottish brogue, and his pride in his national heritage, a pride that he instilled in his family. He was a great storyteller, and he always loved sharing a laugh and a drink with family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, James and Ella Wemyss, and his brothers, Lyle and Wilson Wemyss. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Wemyss; his children, Barry Wemyss (Cecilia), Beverly O'Connor (Cal), and Bruce Wemyss; and his grandchildren, Andrew Wemyss, Julianne Rickard, Daniel Rickard, Alex Wemyss, Megan Wemyss, and Rachel Wemyss. Cremation has taken place. He will be memorialized on Tuesday, March 17 at Faith Lutheran Church, 931 East Main Street, Kent. The family will greet friends at 10:00 a.m., followed immediately by the service at 11:00. Memorial donations may be made to Faith Lutheran Church in Kent.
