Jerry D. Wiland, 87, of Kent, died Saturday, July 6, 2013 at Altercare of Brimfield.

A native of Kent, he was born 17 August 1925 to Hazel and R. Thomas Wiland. He attended Kent City Schools, graduated from Kent State University High School, and attended Kent State University and University of Idaho. During World War II, he served as Gunners Mate 3rd Class in the U. S. Naval Amphibious Forces for two years on USS LST 1026. He participated in three D-Days in the South Pacific, in the liberation of the Philippine Islands, and was awarded three battle stars.

He joined W. W. Reed/Dawson Reed Insurance Agency in 1953 and was active in Kent and Portage County Civic life. He served three years on Kent City Council. He was KSU Booster Club President for twelve years and is an honorary member of the Kent State University Varsity K Club. He was co-chairman of the Kent Sesquicentennial Celebration. He served as Civil Defense Chief during the Korean War. He was a member of the Robinson Memorial Hospital Advisory Committee to build a new hospital, representing the City of Kent. He was a 25 year member of the Kent Rotary Club; was a member of the United Church of Christ where he served as Deacon; and of American Legion Post 496. He was a founding member of the Betts-Wiland Athletic Club. In 1970, he became a member of the Home Savings Bank Board of Directors, and has served as Vice Chairman of the Board; and is currently a Director Emeritus of Hometown Bank.

In 1947, he married Louise Van Ness of Chicago. They had three children, Cathy Lyn Ben Yair, Thomas Charles, and Carolyn Louise Kasper. Mrs. Wiland died in 1962. In 1964, he married Joyce Fuller Tischendorf, combining her two children Mark Mason Tischendorf and Jay Tischendorf with his children. In 1967 they had a son, Edwin Townsend Wiland. Joyce died in 2004; Kathy died in 2012; and his brother, Richard died in 2006.
