Jessie R. Shumaker of Kent, OH passed away on May 17, 2013. Jessie was born on July 6, 1921 in Mount Airy, NC to Anna Allred and Fred Bunker, grandson of Siamese twins Chang and Eng Bunker. In 1927 Jessie's family moved to Mogadore, OH where she graduated from Mogadore High School in 1940. Jessie graduated with honors from Kent State University in 1944 with a major in Home Economics, and then received her Master's degree in Education in 1950. In 1948 Jessie married Earl F. Shumaker, a professor of Chemistry at Kent State University. Mrs. Shumaker was an assistant professor in Home Economics at Kent State University beginning in 1951 until she retired in 1974. She also taught Home Economics at Hiram College and worked briefly at the Akron Art Institute.
Jessie was a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority, the Psi Lambda Omicron Society, Phi Beta Kappa, KSU faculty wives, KSU University Women, KSU Chestnut Society, KSU Alumni Association, the Kent Garden Club, the Portage County Garden Club, the Elm Garden Club of Kent, and was an active member of Miriam Circle at the United Methodist Church of Kent. Over many years, Jessie and Earl could be seen at virtually every athletic event KSU had to offer, and each received recognition for their faithful support from the KSU athletic association.
Jessie and Earl were avid travelers, visiting all 50 states, Canada, Mexico, and Europe. They also enjoyed playing bridge with their friends.
Jessie is survived by her son, Jeffrey E. Shumaker and her grandson Eric Shumaker of Silver Spring, MD; her sister, Frances Gougler of Mogadore, OH; her niece, DeeDee Gougler of Phoenix, AZ; and her nephew, Billy Gougler of Mogadore. Mrs. Shumaker was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Earl F. Shumaker. Jessie will be greatly missed by the many students and friends whose lives were touched by her charm and smile.
The family would like to acknowledge the special care provided by Dr. Rose Seliga, the staff at Kent Ridge, and the nurses and staff associated with Robinson Memorial Hospital's Hospice unit.
A memorial service will be held at the United Methodist Church of Kent on May 22, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel. Private burial was held at Standing Rock Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the United Methodist Church of Kent, or the KSU Alumni Association.
