Joan R. Kazmierski, 82, of Tallmadge and formerly of Kent, died Monday, December 5, 2016 at Akron City Hospital Medical Center.
She was born August 3, 1934 in Erie, PA to Anthony and Alexandra A. (Godamski) Kazmierski.
Joan began skating professionally in the National Roller Derby League in 1953 with the Chicago Westerners and was that season's female Rookie of the Year. In 1961 she joined the National Skating Derby Roller Games as a member ofthe Texas Outlaws. ln 1965 she returned to Roller Derby as women's captain of the New York Chiefs for three seasons. The final years of her career were spent with Roller Games skating in the United States, Japan and Australia as a member of the San Francisco Shamrocks, Chicago Hawks, Detroit Devils and Texas Outlaws. She retired from competition following the 1970 season. She was employed at Rockwell Automation in Twinsburg from 1979 to 1988.
She is survived by her companion, Betty Norman of Tallmadge and formerly of Kent; brother, Raymond (Norma) Kazmierski; sister, Freda (Lou) Campbell of Kent; three nephews; ten nieces; and many great/great great nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Stanley W. Cackowski and Joseph S. Cackowski; sisters, Virginia A. Zenar and Helen W. Jant; and Cocker Spaniel, Lucky.
