John Baptist Ferlito

February 21, 1950 — March 30, 2017

John Baptist Ferlito III passed away Thursday, March 30, 2017 at the University Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio.

John was born February 21, 1950, in Cleveland, Ohio, to John and Betty Ferlito. He was a 1968 graduate of Euclid High School, active in wrestling, soccer, and the Boy Scouts, earning the rank of Eagle Scout. In 1972, he graduated from Ohio State University with a degree in Microbiology, and went on to do his graduate work in Public Health at Kent State University. He retired from the Kent Health Department after 39 years of serving as the city's Health Commissioner.

John committed his life to serving his family, his community, and his church; his values reflected in his actions and where he spent his time. He coached special needs athletes and other youth, arranged vison screenings and provided glasses with the Lion's Club for thousands of Kent residents, and showed the entire community a healthy way of living through his work promoting and fundraising for Pedal with Pete. A member of Faith Lutheran Church, John served as president of the congregation and on multiple boards, as well as teaching Sunday School. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, on bike paths and by the beach, traveling, debating politics (MSNBC was his favorite), and supporting the local theatre. Most of all, he enjoyed being with his family.

John will be deeply missed by his wife of 44 years, Linda Hood Ferlito, his daughter, Logan Ferlito (Enoch Shih) of Palo Alto, California, and his son, Jake Ferlito of Kent, Ohio. He will also be missed by his sister, Carol Rosa (Dennis) of Willoughby, Ohio, brother, Ken Ferlito (Anne) of Euclid, Ohio, and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

A celebration of life service will be held April 15, at 12:30 at Faith Lutheran Church of Kent, 931 E. Main Street, Kent, Ohio 44240. Friends and family will be received before the service from 10:00am - 12:00pm. In lieu of flowers, please honor John's life the way he lived it by giving to others. Memorial contributions can be donated in support of special needs athletes to the Portage County Foundation Ferlito Family Fund, 138 East Main Street, Suite 201 Kent, Ohio 44240, or to Faith Lutheran Church, 931 E. Main Street, Kent, Ohio 44240. Arrangements are being handled by Bissler Funeral Home.
