John Sidney Johnson, 92, a Kent resident since 1961, passed away Friday, May 24, 2013 at his residence.
He was born November 3, 1920 in Cumberland, Virginia to Robert and Minnie (Crump) Johnson. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II.
He worked for the Hudson School System for 20 years and General Motors Terex Division for 16 years. He was also a handyman of sorts, doing many odds & ends jobs, yard work, house work, painting to provide for his family. During his retirement, John enjoyed fishing, gardening, scouring local yard sales and loved setting up his "booth" at the Hartville Flea Market.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Elvalena (Anderson); sons: Lonnie "LBJ" and John Johnson of Kent; stepson Tony Anderson of Philadelphia; daughter Minnie Green of Kent; grandchildren: Duane Johnson of Kent, Lonnie "Peanut" Johnson Jr. of Ravenna; step-grandchildren: Anthony Anderson of Kent, Tony Anderson of New York, Marcus Anderson of Philadelphia, Boyd (LaShonda) Marston of Hilton, NY; brother, Benjamin Bowens of New York; sisters: Doris Bowens of New York, and Josephine Roberts of Florida; brother-in-law, Rufus Anderson of Philadelphia; sisters-in-law: Elizabeth Carter of Philadelphia and Margaret Johnson of Washington D.C.; cousin, Virginia Crump of Virginia; caregiver and special friend, Felice Bozeman of Kent and many other dear relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Clarence Fields and sister, Marie Mackey.
The family would like to express their appreciation to the many people who befriended John over the years and at the various flea markets throughout the area whom he loved to share his stories with.
In keeping with John's wishes, a private graveside service will be held. Bissler & Sons Funeral Home and Crematory are handling the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 525 N. Broad St., Canfield, OH 44406-9274.
