John C. Lewis

John "Jack" Lewis, 76, died peacefully at his home in Kent, Sunday March 7th, 2010 after a long illness. He was born September 5th, 1933 in Greensburg, Pennsylvania a son of Alwyn and Annabelle Lewis. Jack, as known to his friends, grew up in Greensburg, Pennsylvania and graduated from Westminster College in 1957. He spent over 30 years as an elementary school teacher starting in the Lisbon School District and finishing as principal at Monroe Elementary School in Tallmadge. He retired from Kent State University as a reading and writing Tutor. Jack was a long time member of the Presbyterian Church of Kent; where he held several positions within the church including Deacon and Elder. His true passion was singing in the church choir, which he sang in for over 35 years. Jack was an avid lover of sports and the Pittsburgh Steelers. He played football while in college and cycled frequently through the Kent community. He particularly enjoyed coaching and watching his sons and their children in various activities. Jack is survived by his wife, Erma J. of Kent; his children, Mark E. (Lory) of Kent, Matthew, A. (Michaelann) of Brimfield, and Michael, J. (Denise) of Garfield Heights; grandchildren, Andrew, Brian, Eric, Harrison, Trevor, Hannah, Madeline; brother, Richard of Harrisburg, North Carolina; and sister, Charlotte of Hanover, Pennsylvania. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 13th, 2010, at 1:00 pm, at the Presbyterian Church of Kent with Reverend Aaron Meadows officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Presbyterian Church of Kent's choir located at 1456 East Summit Street, Kent, Ohio 44240.
