John T. Lilley, 93, of Kent, Ohio, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family, October 5, 2016. John was born in Connorsville, Indiana, June 2, 1923, to Lilian Jane (Weston) Shrewsbury, England and James T. (Tom) Lilley of Cradley Heath, England.
John enlisted in the Navy after high school and served in Lighter than Air during WWII. After the Navy he graduated from Kent State University and was commissioned, First Lieutenant in the Army. He taught Engineering Graphics and Drafting at Cuyahoga Falls High School, lectured at NASA in Cleveland and volunteered for the Cleveland Coast Guard Auxiliary. The family was also very involved with AFS (American Field Service) for many years and hosted 5 students from around the world.
John enjoyed singing more than life itself. He started singing in his church choir as a child and continued all through his life. His last gig was with the Barbershop quartet, "Rapture" and the Barbershop Chorus of Akron. He was also a lifelong pilot and loved to fly and also enjoyed sailing.
John is survived by his devoted wife of 60 plus years; Kathy Young Lilley and his children; Jon T. Jr., Mary K. (Chuck) Sitko and Ian C. (Julie Lang) Lilley. He also had twin granddaughters; Whitney Sitko and Shelby (Tim) Pepin.
The family will receive friends Monday Oct. 10th, 3-6PM at Christ Episcopal Church, 118 South Mantua Street, Kent Ohio 44240, where a Memorial Service will be held at 6:00PM. Arrangements are being handled by Bissler and Sons Funeral Home.
