John Perkowski, 95, of Kent, died Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2016, surrounded by his family. He was born on Dec. 27, 1920, to Peter and Emelia (Kaliszewski) Perkowski. He was a proud World War II Army veteran, serving in the 202nd Combat Engineer Battalion, B Company. He retired after 43 years with Gougler Machine Company in Kent. John was a lifelong member of St. Patrick Church, and enjoyed serving as an usher. He was an avid golfer, who volunteered as a starter into his 90's at the Kent State Golf Course, where he shot a hole-in-one in his late 80's. John enjoyed the many friendships he developed on the golf course, as an enthusiastic fan of Kent State Women's Basketball, and as a member of Izaak Walton League and Ducks Unlimited. He and his buddy Ray had a great time regularly perusing the Hartville Flea Market. Some of his favorite activities included fishing, hunting, and creating personalized fishing rods with Swiss Fix reels.
John is survived by daughter, Linda Miller of Kent; son, Robert (Marilyn) Perkowski of Massillon; four grandchildren, Julie (Scott) McKinney, Travis (Wendy) Miller, Rebecca (Brent) Wesley, and Brent (Rita) Perkowski; eleven great grandchildren; and brother, Carl Perkowski. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Kathryn Ann (Horning) Perkowski; son-in-law Gary Miller; great grandson, Colin McKinney; brothers, Mike, Tony, Eugene, and Waddy; and sisters, Elizabeth Norton, Genevieve Stutzman, Regina Slack, and Anna Perkowski.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, Jan. 29th at St. Patrick Church with Fr. Richard Pentello officiating. Private burial will be held at Standing Rock Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association c/o Alzheimer's Research, 70 W.
