John "Jack" Salter

John "Jack" Salter, of Kent, passed away on Wednesday, June 15, 2016 at UH Portage Medical Center.

He was born to Roy and Hazel (Keener) Salter on July 29, 1936. Jack graduated from Theodore Roosevelt High School in Kent, where he was a member of Roosevelt's first basketball team to play in the state finals in 1954. Upon graduation, he attended Miami University and later was graduated from Ashland College with a B.S. in Elementary Education. Jack received his Master's Degree from Akron University in Elementary Administration. He began his career in teaching in 1960 with the Streetsboro Schools. He also taught in Silver Lake and Kent before returning to Streetsboro to serve as principal of Wait Elementary. He finished his administrative career in Stow where he served as principal of Echo Hills Elementary.

Jack is a past member of the Lion's Club of Streetsboro and Stow. He was a member of Stow Kiwanis, where he served as president and treasurer. He was a hospital volunteer and auxiliary member for more than 10 years at Robinson Memorial Hospital. He established the Volunteer Bereavement Fund. Jack was a member of Twin Lakes Country Club where he enjoyed playing golf. Jack's favorite sport was the Sport of Kings, visiting Northfield Park for many, many years. He always said he would go up and bet on one night and go up the next night to watch his horses finish.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father and his first wife, Kathy, who he was married to for 41 years. He leaves behind his loving and faithful wife, Barbara; children, John (Ginger) Salter, Melissa (Mike) Hartman, Michelle Salter, Debbie (Jim) Huston, Debbie Lewis, and Jerry Lewis; grandsons, Shawn & Dustin Hartman, and Dustin Lewis; and granddaughters, Sarah (David) Danko, Erin, Sara, and Emily.

Calling hours will be held 2-4 PM Saturday, June 18th at Bissler & Sons Funeral Home and Crematory, 628 West Main Street, Kent where memorial services will be held 4:00 PM, with Rev. Douglas Denton officiating. Memorials may be made to Humane Society Of Portage County Inc., 8122 Infirmary Rd, Ravenna, OH 44266.
