John Joseph Somers, 63, of Kent, passed away on Friday, November 15, 2013, at the Hospice of the Western Reserve in Cleveland.
He was born on June 17, 1950 to Jack and Florence (nee Kennedy) Somers of Ravenna. Mr. Somers was a 1968 graduate of Ravenna High School and a 1972 graduate of Kent State University where he played football and rugby as he earned his B.A. in Speech Therapy and his master's degree in Public Administration. From 1969 to 1973, he served as an officer in the United States Marine Corps. He was always very proud to be a Marine and to have served his country. From 1980 until his retirement in 2007, Mr. Somers worked at Roadway Express as a dock supervisor, dispatcher, and terminal manager.
Mr. Somers was an avid rugby player, skier, weight lifter, golfer, and runner. He completed three Marine Corps marathons and several marathon relays between the ages of 41 and 55. He also loved to ride his bike and annually participated in the MS 150 Pedal to the Point ride to raise money for multiple sclerosis.
Mr. Somers had a passion for reading about history, particularly World War II, and he enjoyed watching the Browns and the Tour de France every year. In addition, he loved traveling with his family and spending time with his many friends. He savored life and brought joy to everyone he knew.
He is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Jeanne M. (Carfagna) Somers; son, John B. "Jack" (Joanna) Somers of Cleveland Hts.; grandchildren, Jane M. and Henry A.; sister, Florence A. (Joseph) Boyle of Mentor. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Calling hours will be held 2-5 PM Sunday, November 17th at Bissler & Sons Funeral Home in Kent. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 A.M., Monday, November 18th at University Parish Newman Center, 1424 Horning Rd., Kent, with Fr. Steve Agostino, S.J. officiating. Burial will be held at Standing Rock Cemetery.
