John Patrick Wunderle

March 15, 1921 — April 22, 2011

John P. Wunderle, 90, passed away peacefully April 22, 2011.

Mr. Wunderle was born in Cleveland, Ohio March 15, 1921. The family moved to Kent in 1929. He attended St. Patrick's grade school and graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1938.

John enlisted in the Army Air Corp. in World War II. He taught instrument flying in B-25's, went on to B-17 transition training and then became a Commander on a B-29 and was scheduled to go to the South Pacific when the war ended.

John worked at Ohio Bell Telephone Company for 42 years and retired in 1981. He was very active in the Kent Historical Society, The Canal Society of Ohio, The Akron Train Club and the Kent Rotary Club.

John had a passion and vast knowledge in history and past transportation in Ohio and beyond. He was always happy to provide educational talks to groups interested in the history of canals and railroads and was often approached by authors to help with their research.

John was preceded in death by his parents Carl V. and Helen Wunderle, sister, Rosemary (Richard) Sessions, granddaughter, Carlie Crocker, and daughter-in-Iaw, Denise (John) Wunderle. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Mary Lou, sons John, Jr., Tim (Jeanne) Wunderle and daughters, Susanne Blok and Laurie (Gary) Knuth, 13 grandchildren, ten great grandchildren; brothers, Carl and Frank Wunderle.

The family would like to give a special thank you to the entire staff at Traditions of Bath Road for the wonderful loving care and compassion they gave to John.

Calling hours will be held 5-8 PM Tuesday, April 26th at Bissler & Sons Funeral Home in Kent. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 AM Wednesday, April 27th at St. Patrick Church in Kent. Interment will be held at Standing Rock Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Kent Historical Society, P.O. Box 663, Kent, OH 44240
