Joseph Messina, 82, of St. Robert, Missouri, died Saturday, March 31, 2012 at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.
He was born March 20, 1930 in Akron to Colagero and Dolorata "Doloris" (Dilaria) Messina. He was a Korean War US Army veteran. He was affiliated with Metropolitan Life Insurance Company for over 25 years, finishing his career in Italy. Then he went to work for the DOD serving as Consumer Affairs Advocate for military members. He retired in 1995. He was a member of the California Referree's Association. He refereed "American style" football in Italy, as well as Military Intramural sports. He was a member of Faith Evangelical Church of St. Robert. He was famous among friends and family for his culinary skills.
He is survived by his wife, Mary (Stone) Messina, whom he married on March 24, 1979; sons, Greg Messina of Kent and Mark (Patty) Messina of Akron; daughters, Suzanne Aleman of Cuyahoga Falls and Tish (James) Rogers of Kent; seven grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and sister, Jennie Haralson of Yucaipa, CA. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Guytano "Guy" Messina and Colagero "Lee" Messina Jr.
Calling hours will be held 2-4 and 6-8 PM Monday, April 9th at Bissler & Sons Funeral Home in Kent where services will be held 1:00 PM Tuesday, April 10th with US Army Chaplain (Captain) Michael McCawley officiating. A memorial service will he planned in St. Robert, MO at a later date. Private burial will be held at Crown Hill Cemetery.
