Joseph Paul Mittiga, age 96, passed away on June 21, 2021, at home with his family by his side. He was a lifelong resident of Kent, Ohio. Born January 22, 1925, he was one of twelve children of Rosario and Francesca Mittiga. Joe loved sports and excelled at football at Kent Roosevelt High School. After graduation in 1943 he was drafted directly into the Army Air Corp during World War II. He joined the 6th Infantry Division, 63rd Regiment in mid-January 1945. He served as a combat medic in the Philippines. Joe was awarded the Combat Medical Badge and Bronze Star for his service.
After the war, Joe attended Kent State University where his kid sisters introduced him to Jean Morse, who later became his wife of 60+ years. He graduated in 1949 with a degree in Business. Joe spent most of his professional career at the Goodyear Aerospace Corporation in the Defense Division. He formed lifelong friendships from high school (The Jolly Eleven) and work, including many golfing buddies. He loved hiking, gardening, and cooking, passing down treasured family recipes to his children and grandchildren.
Joe was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jean. He is survived by his sister Antoinette Schmiedl; children, Jeff Mittiga and Mary Mittiga (David Burris); grandchildren, Sarah Burris, and Molly (John) Stutts, and great-grandson, Rory Stutts.
Graveside services will be held on Monday, June 28, 11:00 A.M. at Standing Rock Cemetery in Kent. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favorite charity.
