June F. Ake, 87, of Kent, OH, passed away peacefully Monday, December 8, 2014 at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna.
She was born October 24, 1927 in Brimfield to Cary D. and Hattie (Garber) Derry. June retired in 1989 from the Office of Financial Affairs at Kent State University. She was an active member of the United Methodist Church of Kent where she served as the Mary Reed Circle Chairman, and as Communion Steward for over 20 years. She was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, Cub Scout den mother, Girl Scout troop leader, and president of PTA when her children were younger.
She was an avid bridge player, belonging to many bridge clubs. She loved gardening and watching the birds the flowers attracted, including the chickens that came to the back door every day for oatmeal. She relished spending time with her family, hosting family events, and imparting many family traditions. She will be dearly missed by her family and a multitude of friends whom she loved dearly.
She is survived by son, Raymond E. (Cathy) Ake of Hubbard; daughters, Elizabeth K. (Carl Hamilton) Ake of Kent and Suzanne M. (Ronald) Cooper of Round Rock, TX; grandchildren, David (Gloria) Ake, Jason (Mary Lee) Ake, Ryan Hamilton, and Taylor Hamilton; great grandchildren, Pamela Linebaugh, Jake Ake, and Chase Ake. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Russell E. Ake; sisters, Evelyn Batchelor, Bernice Heasley, and Emily Fleming; brothers, Glenn Derry, Victor Derry, Walter Derry, Gerald Derry, James Derry, and Arthur Derry.
Calling hours will be held 6-8 PM Wednesday, December 10th at Bissler & Sons Funeral Home in Kent. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, December 11th at the Wesley Chapel at The United Methodist Church of Kent with Rev. Dr. David Palmer and Rev. Douglas Denton officiating.
