Leon Fenstermacher, 104, joined his Heavenly Father on February 13, 2018. He was born in Fowler, Colorado, on March 17, 1913, the son of Leon Walsh and Ruth Marie (Fisher) Fenstermacher.
The family relocated to Columbus, Ohio. Leon graduated from The Ohio State University in 1935 receiving a B.S. degree in Finance and Banking and a N.S.A. Commission. He was employed that same year by The Ohio National Bank in Columbus. In 1946, he joined The Coshocton National Bank and in 1957, the family moved to Kent, Ohio, where he joined The City Bank. He retired as CEO and Chairman of the Board in 1977.
Leon was a Veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. He was in the 570th Field Artillery Battalion as an artilleryman in the South Pacific.
Leon was a member of the Kent United Church of Christ for 59 years, serving as the Treasurer and Chairman of its Board of Deacons. He was also a member of the United Methodist Church of Kent. He was a member of the Twin Lakes Country Club, Kent Rotary and a volunteer with The Kent State University Orchestra Society, serving on its board. He enjoyed golf and playing bridge. Traveling and classical music were his life's two passions. His father taught piano and voice. "I suppose that is why I liked good music, he said."
Leon was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 72 years, Annabelle. He is survived by his daughter, Susan Wolford; son, David Fenstermacher; granddaughters, Rae Ann Wolford and Jodi Wolford; grandson, Michael Fenstermacher; daughter-in-law, Sharon Fenstermacher and brother-in-law, Charles Hilderbrand.
A Memorial Service for the Life of Leon Fenstermacher will be held on Friday, February 23, 2018, at 11:00 a.m., at the United Methodist Church of Kent, 1435 East Main Street, Kent, Ohio, with Dr. David Palmer and Rev. Douglas Denton officiating.
