M. Ellen (Rockwell) Moore

Maude Ellen Moore, 86, died peacefully at University Hospital in Hospice care on Wednesday, June 3, 2020. Born in Norton, VA, November 3, 1933 she was the daughter of John and Amanda Rockwell. Growing up in Wytheville Va., Ellen played trombone and basketball at George Wythe High School. After graduating top of her class from St. Margret’s School of Nursing in Montgomery, AL she met the love of her life, Jim, after accepting a ride on a rainy night from a free church Bingo game. They married in May of 1955 and later returned to Kent, Ohio to raise their three children while Jim pursued his degree from Kent State University. They recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary with special meals delivered from favorite restaurants. Ellen practiced nursing for her entire career with over 28 years as an operating room nurse, surgical supervisor, and retired as Director of Surgical Services at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna.

Ellen’s focus was always on her family. Over the years, Ellen served as a Campfire girl leader, a den mother, and always attended the children’s athletic and academic events. She dabbled in painting, golf, and became the genealogical expert for her extended family. She and her husband Jim would often visit the Family History Library in Salt Lake City for research and so Jim could ski in the beautiful mountains.

As a member of the Newman Center Parish at Kent State University, Ellen served as a lay reader, taught RCIA, and was an alter server. She was an avid bridge player, continuing to play in several different bridge clubs up until her death. Ellen was also a member of the Red Hat Society, an adopted member of the RHS Class of 50 alumni dinner group, and an active in her neighborhood social functions.

She is survived by her husband, James L., son, James L. Moore Jr., daughters Mary Beth Moore (Tami Hoffman), and Melanie (Edward) Mikusa, grandchildren Christopher (Chau) Moore, Hillary (Joe) Taylor, Andy (Janel) Moore, Madison Moore, and Flannery Mikusa. She is also survived by three great grandchildren, Peyton, Charlie, and Corrie Taylor. In addition to her parents, Ellen is preceded in death by brother James Greer, and sister Shirley Burns.

Ellen supported a variety of charitable organizations. Memorial contribution may be made to the organization of your choice.
