Margaret Elizabeth Cowperthwaite, 93, of Kent, died Friday, December 8, 2017, at Brookdale of Wooster. She passed away peacefully with her son Joe by her side.
She was born June 9, 1924 in Louisville, KY to Mack Hubert and Margaret Kerfoot (Griffith) Farmer. She was the oldest of four children.
Margaret was a generous person who lead a remarkable life. She left home when she was 18. She worked in a factory, waited tables, was a page at NBC where she fielded calls on D-Day. She was retired from the Akron Summit County Library.
She canned her own foods for the winter and baked her family's bread. She was the most devoted letter-writer anyone ever met. She was an Episcopalian, loved to sing, loved theatre, loved her family and was fiercely independent.
She told everyone in her family, "Take every opportunity you get." Her life gave the family courage and a drive to live life to its fullest. Her most generous gift was that of her time; of which she gave freely. She gave to her church, her neighbors and was a proud philanthropic member of the PEO sisterhood.
She was interested in the world around her, and loved to meet people. She loved to experience life, and was incredibly proud that she had traveled with more drivers in more automobile types than anyone. She never wanted to sit idle; her most fortunate of days being "three event days."
She is survived by her son, Joe (Claire) Cowperthwaite of Wilmington, DE; grandchildren, Elizabeth Cowperthwaite, Molly Cowperthwaite, Cameron Cowperthwaite, and Madeline Cowperthwaite; great grandchildren, Rocket Cowperthwaite and Imogene Mable Cowperthwaite; brother, Tom Farmer of Lakeland, FL; and sisters, Virginia Howie of Dunedin, FL and Nancy Stiles of Louisville, KY. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lowery LeRoy Cowperthwaite in 1985, and son, Tom Cowperthwaite in 2016.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, December 16 at Christ Episcopal Church with Rev. Julie Blake Fisher officiating. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church. Burial will be held at Standing Rock Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to L.
